Day 6 Analysis
Spain vs. Ukraine
Ukraine looked absolutely terrible in this game. They couldn't keep possession through the midfield, their defense was porous at best, and Spain's defenders almost completely shut down their wing play. It was difficult to tell how Shevchenko was feeling because he never saw the ball. In short, this was an awful start for a team that many people picked as dark horses to make it deep into the tournament. They'll need to scramble now just to make it into the second round. Meanwhile, all the U.S. fans are thinking, "Thank God we're not last anymore!"
Well, at least not until we play Italy on Saturday anyway.

Spain can't get full credit for four goals on this day, however, because David Villa's spot kick and the ejection of Vashchuk were completely blown calls on a challenge that a) was committed outside the box, b) did not actually see the player go down until well after he released the shot, and c) could not have been more fair. Ukraine was robbed there, though they were always going to get spanked regardless of whether Vashchuk was on the field or not. Hopefully the suspension from the next game will be overruled on appeal, but somehow I doubt it.
Fun nicknames from today's game (not even made up):
Carlos "Captain Caveman" Puyol
Fernando "El Nino" Torres
Sergey "Radiohead" Rebrov
I only watched the Tunisia vs. Saudi Arabia game in fast forward, but the last 10 minutes of this game were incredibly exciting, and this draw plus Spain's thrashing of Ukraine puts second place in this group completely up for grabs. If Ukraine recovers their form (and they'll need to look like a completely different team if they expect to win any games), they can still make it out, but if not, the second team to make it out of this group is anyone's guess.
Germany vs. Poland

Ballack looked fine and fully fit in this game, while Podolsky and Klose proved they will be a very interesting strike force to watch going forward. Podolsky's skill on the ball is almost Brazilian in quality and he's fast. I'd like to see him get more touches in future games, perhaps by dropping a bit deeper into the midfield from time to time, but overall Germany are an unexpectedly fun team to watch. Speaking of fun, Philipp Lahm is my favorite new player to watch. A right-footed left back, he plays solid defense and always seems to be involved in the attack, whether it's via making overlapping runs or simply stepping up for the ball when Germany switch the point of attack. He's also lethal when it comes to crossing the ball, something that far more teams in this tournament wish they were.
It nearly didn't happen, but Germany walked out of today's game as deserved winners and already qualified for the second round. Happy times im Deustchland.

Germany arn't yet qualified for the second round!
Groups can finish 6,6,6,0 and have a 6 pointer eliminated.
Richard
Yes they can, except this year the tiebreaker is head to head, and Germany holds that one against two teams now, thus making them a lock.
Of course they are out now since Costa Rica lost earlier today.
But in a 6,6,6,0 the head to head is a beats b, b beats c and c beats a (they all beat d) so it is possible for a team in Germany's position to still have gone out.
Anyway I'm proving you have at least one reader :)
Richard
Ted,
From a spaniard's point of view, I'm really dissapointed by your commentaries.
Let's be fair: Spain overrunned Ukraine from minute 1 to minute 90. No team makes 4 goals (2 in the first 20 minutes) with just luck or with the help of the referee.
Yeah, yeah, the penalty's still on doubt, but even with that, statistics show that Spain was infinitely superior.
After the first round of games, this is my poll so far:
Best teams:
Spain
Germany
Ecuador
Chetz Republic
Argentina
Expected more, but still ok:
Brasil
Italy
Portugal
England
Absolutely Dissapointed:
USA (I expected more, considering this country is my second home)
Poland
Netherlands
Korea
France
The rest, overall we are getting what we were supposed to get.
PS: You are doing a really good job at Wizards.
Ted,
awesome work. I enjoy reading every piece you write.
Concerning the Cup, happy times indeed here in Deutschland! The celebrations after the 1:0 victory over Poland were amazing. If we should in fact get further than the quarters, expect a fan-fest explosion all over Germany. You'll be able to hear the roar across the oceans.
I live in one of the Cup Cities (Leipzig), and when you have a window open, you can always tell when Germany scores just by the noise going up over the city.
I was positively surprised by the Australians. I'm rooting for the socceroos to make it, but I can't really see them beating either Croatia or Brazil unless Brazil fields Ronaldo again from the start.
I am also disappointed by Michael Ballack. I mean, he was there and he did do his thing for the goal, but from a highly favorded midfielder like him, I want to see some action on the ball. Whenever Ballack got the ball during the Poland game, he immediately passed it on, even if it didn't make sense to do so immediately. He can be genius, but I'd love to see him actually taking some time with the ball and actively advancing the game.
He should put his strikers into favourable positions. Instead, he just makes them run, often in vain. Ballack needs a different team to support him; at Chelsea, he'll get that. But in the German squad, the players are missing whom Ballack can play WITH. He has no interaction partner; instead, he is forced into a commanding role that neither fits into his character on the pitch nor his style of play.
I'd be interested to read your take on that, maybe after the QF game. Is Ballack really a fit for the team?
And also, in broader strokes, how are most teams set up at this Cup? What are the strategies the teams used to advance to the elimination rounds? I bet you already have something like that planned. Either way, I'd love to read it.
Oh yeah, and: Enjoy PT Charleston! Some good stories to be had there this weekend as well. *waits for coverage to begin*
Arrgh, forgot one other thing: Keep an eye on David Odonkor in the German team. He did play a vital role in re-invigorating the game after he came in.
